Натуральная сафьяновая кожа изготавливается из овечьей или телячьей кожи. Это тисненая кожа – диагональный рисунок «в рубчик» наносится методом горячего тиснения, после чего материал обрабатывается специальным воском для защиты от загрязнений и царапин. Такая фактура совсем не похожа на привычный рисунок натуральной кожи, возможно, поэтому ее часто принимают за искусственную.
